Heuvelton centennial celebration was “great fun”

HEUVELTON – The village’s centennial celebrations, held Saturday, were “great fun,” Mayor Barbara A. Lashua said.

Held despite heavy snowfall, the celebrations included a parade, fireworks display and the dedication of a time capsule to be opened at the next centennial.

State Sen. Patricia A. Ritchie, R-Heuvelton, was in attendance at the dedication of the time capsule and presented the village with a proclamation celebrating the town’s history.

The proclamation was “framed and ready to hang,” Mrs. Lashua said.

But the celebration didn’t end there.

At 6 p.m. a parade wound its way down Main Street with hot chocolate available to onlookers.

“The parade was little, but it was spectacular,” Mrs. Lashua said.

Due to the heavy snow, the fire and rescue squads from neighboring villages and towns were unable to attend the parade, but Mrs. Lashua said Heuvelton’s own volunteer fire department made an appearance.

The parade was also beefed up by trucks from the town and village and, Mrs. Lashua said, lasted about half an hour.

“We were able to take our time,” she said. “Instead of throwing candy, we gave out handfuls.”

Mrs. Lashua highlighted one float, by the Friot family, that included a miniature water tower and ice skating rink.

“It was really quite something, Mrs. Lashua said.

Following the parade were fireworks, which Mrs. Lashua said she viewed from the roof of Pickens Hall, where there was also live entertainment inside.

“It was a nice family event,” Mrs. Lashua said of the centennial celebration. “The really special part of it was how often you would see generations of families all spending the afternoon and evening together.”
