WATERTOWN - The American Red Cross of Northern New York is looking for some real heroes to honor for their lifesaving efforts.
Chapter Executive Jane G. Gendron said while the Real Heroes Breakfast has been inactive in the north country for more than a decade, shes bringing it back to make sure everyday heroes are recognized.
The Red Cross is all about helping people and providing skills to people to help save a life, like with CPR and first aid, she said. Thats our mission, and we also support the armed forces. Why not honor someone able to use that skill and save a life?
The Northern New York chapter is accepting nominations for heroes from Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties. Nomination categories include fire, law enforcement, medical, 911 dispatch, adult good samaritan, youth good samaritan, military, animal rescue, education, industrial safety, good neighbor and blood donor.
Recipients will be selected by the chapters board of directors during its Jan. 11 meeting. Awards will be presented during a 7:30 to 9 a.m. Feb. 6 breakfast at the Hilton Garden Inn, 1290 Arsenal St.
Mrs. Gendron said nominees may be individuals or groups.
Part of our mission is to work to alleviate pain and effects of disaster, she said. I think its so important that people who do this just to do this are honored. Hopefully this will be the first of many.
Aside from efforts individuals or groups did alone, the Red Cross of Northern New York assisted 91 families affected by disasters, provided 513 emergency communications to members of the armed forces and their families, and trained 14,115 people in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, first aid and other health and safety courses within Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.
To nominate someone for a Real Heroes award, or to register for the event, call Mrs. Gendron at the Red Cross at 782-4410. Tickets to the breakfast are $25 each.
