Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, has been confirmed for a place on the House Appropriations Committee, which has authority over federal spending.

In a statement from his office, Mr. Owens said the appointment would allow the region to have a voice in funding for federal spending that helps local farmers and Fort Drum, and help reduce the federal deficit by eliminating wasteful spending.

Mr. Owens assignment to the Appropriations Committee requires him to step down from previous appointments on the Agriculture Committee and the Armed Services Committee.
