Ogdensburg library, Remington museum consider shared services

Ogdensburg Public Library and the Frederic Remington Art Museum are considering a shared-services arrangement aimed at the city’s youths.

Library Director Wayne L. Miller and Remington Executive Director Edward A. LaVarnway said the six-month arrangement could be up and running next month once all the details are hammered out and their respective boards approve it.

“It’s still pretty amorphous,” Mr. LaVarnway said Monday.

Remington Education and Advancement Specialist Lauren V. Gilmour would run the program at the library, the museum and the city’s schools.

Mr. Miller said the shared services arrangement would stand until he hires a children’s librarian. The position has been vacant since the January 2011 retirement of Bonnie Wright.

His board chairwoman, Cathy Piche, suggested the concept.

“We have been very fortunate to have had excellent volunteers to run programs,” Mr. Miller said. “They have been complemented by staff coming forward to work with them, plus contracting with outside providers to present special programs. As a result of a suggestion from Chairwoman Piche, I am having an ongoing discussion with Ed LaVarnway, looking at the possibility of sharing personnel. Ed is now in the process of drafting a proposal for a six-month contract for Lauren Gilmour to provide specific kinds of services in the absence of a children’s librarian.”

The services are:

n Development of services for children and caregivers on site and at other locations.

n Engaging in outreach to schools, day care centers, pre-schools, and other community organizations.

n Preparation of displays to promote library programs, seasonal events and other topics of interest.

n Using social media to alert children, teenagers, and caregivers about materials, programs, events as well as to obtain feedback.

Ms. Gilmour won’t venture into the children’s librarian’s other duties. They include materials selection, reference services, evaluation of collections, weeding, reports, planning, supervision and or any administrative, managerial or support duties.
