Claxton-Hepburn’s Missert named to state board

After leadership roles on Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center’s board of directors and the hospital’s foundation, Maureen L. Missert will sit on a state board advising hospital trustees.

Mrs. Missert, who has chaired the hospital board since 2001, was appointed to the board of governors of Healthcare Trustees of New York State last month. She will serve a three-year term.

“I’m honored to be representing Claxton-Hepburn on a statewide board,” Mrs. Missert said. “I think that speaks well for our organization and what a little gem we have here in the north country.”

The board promotes education for hospital directors and trustees across the state, a mission it is emphasizing as elements of the landmark 2009 federal Affordable Care Act come into effect, Mrs. Missert said.

“The next 10 years are going to be critical for health care,” she said. “The more education we have and the more advocacy hospitals can have in Albany, the better we’re all going to be.”

The board advocates for public policy positions concerning hospitals, health insurance, clinics and health care reform. Board members represent hospitals of different sizes and missions from across the state, Mrs. Missert said.

“If you look at the board make-up, they take a nice cross-section of all hospitals,” she said. “It is a way for me to meet with people that I would no longer get to meet, talk to people in area hospitals, bring people back to my hospital, have brainstorming sessions, it is a great way to share ideas and come up with best practices.”

The board is affiliated with the Healthcare Association of New York State, a nonprofit public advocacy group representing health care providers.
