OFA’s LaPiene wins title at Peru


PERU - Tanner LaPiene reacted to his first loss of the season just the way a championship wrestler should react.

On Wednesday’s OFA’s reigning Section 10 Division II 99-pound champion suffered a 4-2 overtime loss to Ryan Brown of Canton. Over the weekend, the Heuvelton Central eighth-grader who wrestles at OFA through a merger agreement, returned to the mat and secured the 99-pound title of the 44th annual Peru Wrestling Classic.

The host Peru Indians took team honors in the 25 team field with 253.5 points followed by Dolgeville at 206, Massena at 126.4, John Jay at 124.5, Saranac Central at 121.6, OFA at 112 and Hudson at 109. Canton took 12th with 56 points.

OFA’s LaPiene and Massena’s Nolan Terrance at 285 provided bookend champions for Section 10.

LaPiene decisioned Noah Handy of Dolgeville 2-1 after scoring pins over Justus Richardson of Dolgeville and posting a 4-2 decision over Brandon Goddeau. Canton’s Brown took third in the 99 pound weight class by decisioning Brandon Goddeau of Peru 12-0.

Terrance pinned Joe Ramada of Essex Junction for the 285-pound title and another Massena wrestler, Joel Hinkley, was pinned by Walter Odell of Middlebury in the fifth place match of the weight class.

Two other OFA wrestlers in Andrew Cole at 170 pounds and Bailey Phelps at 145 pounds, along Massena’s Isaiah Perry at 138 pounds, reached the championship round on Saturday evening.

Cole dropped a 7-1 decision to Troy Seymour of Peru who continued an unbeaten season and was chosen as the Outstanding Wrestler in the 145-285-pound weight classes after winning his fifth championship in the tournament. Cole reached the finals with pins over Colby Staley of Saranac and Damien Franco of John Jay and a major decision over Kegan Pearsall of of Harwood, Vt.

Noah Phillips of Peru bested Phelps 5-2 after Phelps pinned Cody Turner of Colchester, Vt., decisioned Dan Elman of Massena 4-3 and recorded a major decision over William Marcil of Saranac.

Perry dropped a 7-3 decision to Peru’s Jordan Bushey in what was chosen as the Most Exciting Match of the Tournament. Bushey was chosen as the Outstanding Wrestler in weight classes 99-138.

“Jordan was great” said Peru Co-Coach Mike Hogan to the Plattsburgh Press Republican.

“The Perry kid had beaten him two years in a row at the tournament. Perry’s a wonderful kid. He is a credit to our tournament.”

OFA’s Brody Sheppard, who went 4-1 on the weekend, placed third at 106 pounds outscoring Massena’s Michael Brown in a free-wheeling 12-10 overtime decision.

Several other Section 10 wrestlers earned top six place finishes.

106: Kyle Ling of Canton decisioned Kyle Desabrais of Middlebury 6-4 in the fifth place match.

113: OFA’s Hayden LaRock dropped a 17-4 decision to Kyle Goodell of St. Johnsbury in the fifth place match.

126: Landon Laughlin of Massena decisioned Tanner Phillips of Peru 7-4 in the third place match and Cody Bond of Canton lost by default to James Dagesse of St. Johnsbury in the fifth place match.

145: Will Marcil of Saranac decisioned Dan Elman of Massena 2-1 in the fifth place match.

152: Hunter Perrin of Massena won by injury default over James Black of Saranac in the fifth place match. 170: Jimmy Doolittle of Dolgeville decisioned OFA’s Alex Cole 9-4 in the fifth place match.

189: Billy Patti of John Jay pinned Joe Ferrera of Massena in the fifth place match.

195: Thomas Lumbard of Canton pinned Taylor Avantzato of Peru in the fifth place match.

Adam Rickett (2-2 at 126), Josh Wangler (2-2 at 132), Glynn Breen (1-2 at 138), Tyler Eaton (0-2 at 138), Nate Murdock (2-2 at 152), Cody Davis (2-2 at 160) and Allen Smithers (0-2 at 160) also competed for OFA.
