HEUVELTON The driver of a buggy was injured and his horse killed when the vehicle was struck from behind by a car Thursday evening, firefighters at the scene said.
Heuvelton First Assistant Fire Chief Keith M. Weston said buggy driver Samuel Miller, DePeyster, was westbound in the 2200 section of Route 184 about 5:30 p.m. when his buggy was struck by a car driven by Richard E. Smithers, Ogdensburg, who was traveling in the same direction.
Mr. Miller was taken to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, Ogdensburg, with injuries that didnt appear to be major right now, Mr. Weston said Thursday.
Crews were called to the scene at 5:35 p.m. When firefighters arrived, Mr. Smitherss car was there but later left, Mr. Weston said.
Mr. Smithers initially was believed to be uninjured, but later was taken from the scene by an ambulance, Mr. Weston said.
Mr. Weston said he did not have details on when Mr. Smithers might have left the scene nor why he required medical transport. He referred questions about the motorist to state police.
When contacted by a reporter Thursday night, a state police dispatcher said that the matter was still under investigation and that no information was available.
The Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad and St. Lawrence County sheriffs deputies also responded to the scene.
