CANTON - Brian Barry of East Rockaway, formerly of Canton and a member of SAG and a former member of AFTRA, was selected by the Screen Actors Guild Committee to attend the 19th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Ceremony and Reception on Jan. 27 at the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center.

The event will honor 87-year-old Dick Van Dyke with the 49th annual Lifetime Achievement Award and honor winners and outstanding performances during 2012 in Theatrical Motion Pictures and Television.

Mr. Barry, along with all other paid SAG members, has until Jan. 25 to cast votes for their favorite 2012 films, directors, cast and crew. It is just one of the many perks of being a member of the actors’ guild.

The awards event has limited seating and only a select number of members and their guests are able to attend the ceremonies, which are Black Tie Affairs. They include a full cocktail hour, dinner reception and a presentation of awards.

Mr. Barry will also be attending the Screen Actors Guild Post Awards GALA (hosted by People Magazine and the Entertainment Industry Foundation), where he will mingle with Betty White and Eddie Redmayne, just two of his many friends in Hollywood.

Mr. Barry, whose house was severely damaged by Super Storm Sandy in October 2012, has done lots of charity events for underprivileged children, disabled adults and for various organizations, with other actors and musicians. This group includes Dee Snider of Twisted Sister for “Bikers for Babies” and Elizabeth Berkley (Saved by the Bell) and her husband Greg Lauren (Batman) at the “Manhattan Pavilion Charity Events for Children.”

“I am honored to have been selected to attend the ceremony by the committee. I am grateful to Jen (committee member) and the SAG Awards and have told them about the damage my home received from Super Storm Sandy. It has been several rough months so I am anxious to get away from Long Island for a few days. This is an opportunity for me to start the New Year off with something positive that I am very passionate about,” Mr. Barry said.

He earned two master’s degrees from Hofstra University and is the son of Dr. Dana M. Barry and James F. Barry of Canton.
