Vrooman, David Henry Jr. (June 30, 1937- January 8, 2013). Place of Birth: Albany, NY. Place of Death: Canton, NY.

Dave Vrooman was the beloved husband of Sally Eaton Vrooman and father of Peter, Eric and Bruce Vrooman, and father-in-law to Jill Locke and Johnette Stubbs. He had four grandchildren: Zarah and Hendrick Vrooman, who called him “Granddaddy” and Felix and Maxine Vrooman-Locke, who called him their “Papa Dave.” He is also survived by his sister, Joan Vrooman Taylor, of Weston, MA. Dave’s parents, Dorothy and David Vrooman of Schenectedy, NY preceded him in death.

Dave graduated from Albany Academy (1955), where he played football and made lifelong friends. At Cornell University (B.A., 1959), he met Sally, studied Economics, and joined the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity. He vacationed with friends from Albany Academy and Cornell University until the end of his life, and was known for hosting his friends and family at his family’s cottage at Lake George. He was a devoted friend who helped other friends stay connected to each other. After Cornell, Dave earned an M.A. in Economics from Northwestern University (1963) and a Ph.D. (1976) from SUNY Albany. A US Army veteran, David was honorably discharged as a Captain.

Dave taught Economics at St. Lawrence University from 1965-1999, where he was a beloved professor and colleague. He was an avid fan of jazz and classical music, sailing, stargazing, tennis, apple-growing, and trees. He loved natural beauty and spent his last days at his home on the Grasse River.

Peaceful, generous, humble and loving soul, loyal friend in Canton and beyond, Dave Vrooman will be deeply missed.

A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Canton, NY at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2013. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice and Palliative Care Services of St. Lawrence Valley (http://seriousillness.org/slc/administrative/donations.php).
