Cunningham paces Carthage triumph

CARTHAGE — Courtney Cunningham accounted for nine kills and three aces as the Carthage volleyball team claimed a 25-18, 25-15, 25-21 Frontier League interdivision victory over Sandy Creek on Friday.

Cassie Birth chipped in with nine kills and two aces, Nikki Wormwood hit five kills, and Carly Sullivan and Claire Sauter handed out 15 and 11 assists, respectively, for Carthage (9-3 overall, 7-3 league).

Grace Wallace provided 10 kills and eight digs for Sandy Creek (10-2). McKenna Guarasce had six kills and four blocks, while Maddie Bush added nine digs.

WATERTOWN 3, THOUSAND ISLANDS 0

Nemesis Ruiz registered 10 kills, four aces, three blocks and 10 digs as the Cyclones captured a 25-12, 25-20, 25-17 interdivision victory at Watertown High School.

Olivia Heiler pitched in with three kills, three aces and seven assists. Jenna Hibbard supplied seven kills and 15 assists, and Leah Rojas added five kills and 13 digs for Watertown (6-5, 5-4).

Thousand Islands is 4-8.

BEAVER RIVER 3, APW 2

Genevieve Fidler generated 15 kills, 11 aces and 19 service points to help power the Beavers to a 25-14, 21-25, 24-26, 25-12, 25-6 interdivision victory over the Rebels (4-8, 2-8) at Parish.

Keegan Bowman posted 14 assists, 10 points and 13 digs, and Melissa Hunt supplied seven kills, 16 points and 12 digs for Beaver River (7-3).

SOUTH JEFFERSON 3, CAMDEN 1

Jackie Decker provided 16 assists and five aces as the Spartans earned a 22-25, 25-8, 25-14, 25-17 nonleague win over Camden (2-9).

Alex Mooney added 14 service points and six kills and Janessa Vaadi supplied seven kills and four blocks for South Jefferson (9-3).

HOCKEY

CANTON 1, OFA 1

Matt Mende scored a goal in the second period to give Canton a tie with Ogdensburg Free Academy in a Northern Athletic Conference interdivision game at Ogdensburg. Canton is 2-7-2 overall, 0-2-2 league.

Brandon Mullin scored the only goal for the Blue Devils (5-3-1, 5-1-1) in the first period off assists from Gian Rufa and Jake Garrison.

NORTHWOOD PREP 4, NORWOOD-NORFOLK 3

Lake Placid’s Northwood Prep scored twice in the third period to defeat the Flyers (6-5) in a semifinal of the Norwood-Norfolk Tournament.

Northwood Prep will meet Plattsburgh for the championship at 1:30 p.m. while Norwood-Norfolk meets St. Lawrence Central in a consolation game at 3 p.m. That will also be a Northern Athletic Conference Division II game.

PLATTSBURGH 3, ST. LAWRENCE 2

Ryan Whalen scored the game-winning goal at 4 minutes, 38 seconds of the third period as Plattsburgh defeated the Larries (9-2) in the other game of the Norwood-Norfolk Tournament.

Kody Kocsis scored both goals for St. Lawrence Central.

ISLANDERS 4, SALMON RIVER 4

Ronnie Boots scored with 3:02 left in regulation as the Shamrocks forged an overtime tie with the Islanders in an NAC interdivision game at Clayton.

Jordan Van Brocklin scored twice for the Islanders (4-5-2, 2-5-1).

Ty Terrance provided a goal and three assists for Salmon River (1-7-2, 0-4-2).

IMMACULATE HEART 5, S. GLENS FALLS-HUDSON FALLS 3

David Brancheau scored two goals to help lift the Cavaliers to victory over the Bulldogs during a first-round game of the Malone Tournament in Malone.

Jordan Trudeau generated one goal and two assists, and Jason Reape and Jared Pignone each added a goal and an assist. Grant Chamberlain made 19 saves for Immaculate Heart Central (2-8-1).

Kurt Atkins and Andrew Patterson each recorded one goal and one assist for South Glens Falls-Hudson Falls (2-8-2).

LANCASTER 5, MASSENA 1

Three power play goals in the second period helped propel Lancaster to the convincing win over the host Red Raiders in the first round of the Massena Tournament in Massena.

Manny Manns finished with two goals and an assist in leading the Lancaster offense.

Connor Paquin made for 18 saves for Massena.

ROME FREE ACADEMY 4, POTSDAM 2

The Sandstoners gave up two quick goals to start the second period and were unable to recover in time to overcome the Black Knights in the first round of the Massena Tournament.

Jay Rutkowski scored two goals for Rome Free Academy.

Mason Bartell and Trevor Keleher each scored a goal for Potsdam.
