Brushton
Honored: Terry Niles, Brushton, recently received the LeBeau SOARing Educator Award at the SOAR (Stimulating Opportunities After Retirement) fall luncheon. Mr. Niles, of Niles Asset Management, is Civil War scholar and teaches a series of SOAR classes on the Civil War and the life of President Abraham Lincoln. He is active with the St. Lawrence County Historical Association, where he takes part in the Civil War Round Table, has served on the board of trustees and is a member of the finance committee.

Lisbon
Notable donations: The third annual Lights on the River raised $16,200 and almost 3,700 pounds of food for eight local food pantries and two backpack programs. Programs receiving donations from the 2012 event were Lisbon Food Pantry, Ogdensburg Neighborhood Center, Ogdensburg Salvation Army, Canton Neighborhood Center, Canton Church and Family Program, Heuvelton Food Pantry, Waddington Family Resource Center, Hammond Food Pantry and the Lisbon and Madill Backpack Programs.

Gouverneur
Funding: The Gouverneur Business Women Breast Cancer Walk Fund took first place and $2,500 in the Think Pink! Breast Cancer awareness and support contest by California Giant Berry Farms, Watsonville, Calif. The contest, held online through California Giant Berry Farms website, narrowed down several nonprofit funds to finalists and tallied an online vote for the winner.

Basic training: Airman Joshua R. Mousaw graduated with honor ranking from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, on Nov. 30. He is continuing his training at Lackland with a 13-week Security Forces Tech School Training program. Mr. Mousaw is the son of Kevin and Debra Mousaw, Canton, and grandson of Jack and Shirley Smith, Canton, and the late Jane Mousaw-Ferguson. He is a 2011 graduate of Hugh C. Williams Senior High School, Canton.

Winthrop
Took part in military operations: Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Hillary I. Clark, daughter of Virgina A. Bush, Winthrop, and other sailors from the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) recently conducted operations in the vital Asia-Pacific region along with sailors from the USS George Washington (CVN 73). Clark is a 2010 graduate of Massena Central School, and joined the Navy in August 2010.

Scholarship: The Jefferson Lewis Council of New York State United Teachers Retirees awarded Maria Barbaglia a scholarship for $250. The scholarship is given to a randomly selected new teacher in the region. Ms. Barbaglia is a Spanish teacher at Sackets Harbor Central School.
