Massena boys skate to overtime win over Salmon River; N-N denies FA

Massena claimed an overtime decision over Salmon River while Norwood-Norfolk stopped Franklin Academy in NAC boys hockey action on Wednesday.

Massena 2, Salmon River 1 (OT): In a Division I matchup at the Massena Arena, the teams traded first-period goals and went into the five-minute overtime knotted at 1-1 before Zach Robert knocked home the rebound of a shot by Grayson Phillips with 1:09 left to lift the Raiders to the win. Tyler Young, who opened the scoring in the first period with a breakaway goal set up by Robert at the 7:34 mark, also drew an assist on the game-winner.

The Shamrocks tied the game at 10:30 of the opening frame when Nate Smoke finished off a play set up by Naylen Laffin-Stone.

Connor Paquin turned aside 17 shots in the winning effort while Aidan Comins recorded 26 stops for the Shamrocks.

The Raiders are slated to host a Martin Luther King Day matinee on Monday against Canton starting at 1 p.m. while the Shamrocks will be on the road for a non-league game against Suffern.

N-N 3, FA 1: At Dominic Zappia Arena, the host Icemen led 3-0 before going on to claim the win over their Division II rival.

Zeb Brown sparked the winning effort with two goals three minutes apart in the first period, the first assisted by Austin Cousineau at the 5:33 mark and the second by Austin Cousineau and his twin brother, Brandon, at 8:33.

Troy Kovach pushed the Icemen lead to 3-0 just 3:36 into the second period with Austin Cousineau earning his third assist of the game on the play.

The Huskies took advantage of a late rash of penalties by the Icemen to score their only goal of the game with 2:53 left when Kelsey Head converted from Bailey Conklin and Cameron Daniels for a power play tally.

Brandon Richards made 31 saves in the winning effort while Joey Brown was credited with 27 stops for the Huskies.

The Icemen return to action on Monday with a non-league game at Lake Placid starting at 2 p.m.

The other two NAC games played on Wednesday saw OFA blank the Islanders 6-0 and Canton shutout Tupper Lake 4-0.

OFA 6, Islanders 0: At Alexandria Bay, the visiting Blue Devils built a 3-0 lead in the first 6:20 of the game and generated a pair of shorthanded goals en route to downing the Islanders.

David Prudhomme turned aside the 20 shots he faced working the crease for the shutout. Jon Tayler led a balanced OFA offense with a pair of goals. Brandon Mullins, Zach Barr and Jake Garrison each tallied a goal and assist while Mark Morrow accounted for the other goal.

Cole James and Miles Kearns combined to make 27 saves in the losing cause.

Canton 4, Tupper Lake 0: At the Canton Pavilion, E.J. Curtis netted a pair of goals to spark the Bears past the Lumberjacks. Jay Proulx and Sean Rodee connected for the other Canton goals. Matt Mende and Nate Gibson finished with two assists each while Jon Stone posted 18 saves backstopping the shutout.

Marcus Richer handled 38 shots in the loss.
