POTSDAM — A Madrid man was extradited from Florida to face grand larceny charges in connection with the alleged theft of railroad equipment from a Norwood business last year.

St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies on Wednesday charged Alex J. Amyot, 37, on an arrest warrant issued by Potsdam Town Justice Samuel R. Charleson.

Mr. Amyot is accused of stealing several tons of metal rail-related items from an unnamed business in the Norwood area sometime in August.

St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin M. Wells said the items, which were related to track maintenance, were valued at about $20,000, although Mr. Amyot was able to sell the goods for only a fraction of that amount, perhaps “a couple thousand.”

Deputies said Mr. Amyot then fled to Florida, where he was captured Jan. 5 and charged with being a fugitive from justice.

Mr. Amyot was charged in Potsdam with third-degree grand larceny, a class D felony, and arraigned before Norfolk Town Justice George C. Grubee. He was sent to St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, in lieu of $10,000 bail or $15,000 bond.
