Early meeting indicates potential savings for Hounsfield, Sackets Harbor

Few details were available following a preliminary meeting Thursday to discuss sharing services between the town of Hounsfield and the village of Sackets Harbor.

The informal meeting between town Supervisor Timothy W. Scee, village Mayor F. Eric Constance and Sackets Harbor Central School District Superintendent Frederick E. Hall Jr. ended with the three parties looking to compile data that will help pinpoint areas to share services and reduce costs, along with researching which state regulations would be relevent for such a change.

“There’s a multitude of things that need to be figured out before we can move to a feasibility stage,” Mr. Constance said. He said the data compilation was necessary before the Town Council and village Board of Trustees meet to further discuss the matter.

“We’d have more questions than answers if we didn’t do the preliminary work first,” Mr. Constance said. No timetable has been set for such a combined meeting.

Mr. Scee said one area that was discussed in the preliminary meeting was a possible combined fuel depot.

“All three entities use a lot of fuel, so we wanted to look and see if there was a way we could look at it to save costs,” he said.

The discussion follows the two municipalities’ discussion for such a plan at their meetings earlier this month.

One reason for the interest in such a move was concerns about high debt at the state level trickling down to the area. Among the ideas previously discussed by council and board members to cut costs include sharing employees, department resources and municipal bodies.
