MONTAGUE Two snowmobilers were injured, one critically, in a head-on collision at 12:05 p.m. Saturday on Culpepper Road in the town of Montague.
Lewis County sheriffs deputies said Elizabeth A. Roy, 18, Greentown, Pa., was driving south on a 2005 Ski-Doo when she hit a large rock hidden under the snow on the side of the trail, causing her to lose control and veer into the path of a sled driven by William T. Jones, 46, Slate Hill.
Ms. Roy, who was stuck underneath the Jones snowmobile, was flown by LifeNet to Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, where she was listed in critical condition.
Mr. Jones was taken by Lewis County Search and Rescue to Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, for treatment of multiple compound fractures to his right arm, deputies said.
The Lowville Fire Department helped set up a landing zone for the helicopter at Tug Hill Hook and Ladder.
At least two other snowmobile crashes were reported Saturday in Martinsburg and Montague; no further information was available.
