MASSENA - The village’s Board of Trustees has approved four-year contracts for six village office employees.

The contract covers the Massena Police Department senior clerk, deputy treasurer, Department of Public Works administrative assistant, Code Enforcement Office administrative assistant, village office account clerk and village office keyboard specialist. The six employees are the only non-unionized employees working for the village, Mayor James F. Hidy said.

The contract guarantees each employee a 1 percent wage increase from June 1, 2012 to May 31, 2013, a 2 percent increase from June 1, 2013 to May 31, 2014 and again from June 1, 2014 to May 31, 2015, and a 2.5 percent increase from June 1, 2015 to May 31, 2016. Employees will also receive longevity wage increases of $500 for five to nine years of service; $900 for 10 to 14 years; $1,150 for 15 to 19 years; $1,300 for 20 to 29 years; and $1,500 for more than 29 years. Employees will receive health care with a contribution of $10 per week until June 1, 2015, when that amount will raise to $13 per week.

The contract negotiations were handled by village trustees Patricia K. “Trish” Wilson and Timothy J. Ahlfeld, who based the rate of the wage increases on previous contracts with other village bargaining units.

“As a village board we recognize the quality of the work (these employees) do, but economic times are lean and we ultimately answer to the village residents. We came up with the best possible rate of wage increases we could,” Mr. Hidy said.
