MASSENA - St. Lawrence Centres plan to host its first Snow Sculpting Competition as part of the Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce annual Winter Carnival activities this weekend, has been cancelled.
Because of the January thaw, the immense amount of clean white snow required to make several 4 x 4 x 8 snow blocks is no longer available. This snow melt, combined with an extended forecast of frigid temperatures, has forced the centre to cancel the much-anticipated event this year, said Ronald Patnode, marketing manager.
Although this years snow sculpting activity is cancelled, the St. Lawrence Centre is making plans to host its first New York state sanctioned snow sculpting event designed to attract a wide variety of sculptors, both amateur and professional.
This annual sanctioned snow sculpting event would complement the annual sanctioned dogsled races at Hawkins Point, while adding another attraction to the Massena Winter Carnival activities. Many of the competing teams will use the mall competition experience as a practice run for the nationals.
Other states holding sanctioned championship completions include New Hampshire, Vermont, Alaska, Maine and Wisconsin.
Teams that registered for the competition, or anyone interested in snow sculpting, are encouraged to attend an informational meeting at 9 a.m. Friday in the mall community room. Space is limited. Reservations are appreciated by calling 764-1001.
