Jones terminated from teaching job at Potsdam


POTSDAM - A special education teacher at AA Kingston Middle School has been terminated effective immediately following the results of a disciplinary hearing connected to charges of grand larceny lodged against her last spring.

Amy R. Jones of Norfolk was charged in March 2012 with fourth-degree grand larceny and fifth-degree conspiracy for allegedly allowing her son, John E. Jones, 22 and his girlfriend at the time, Natalie B Corranza, 19, both of Norfolk, to use her checkout lane without paying for merchandise when she was working a second job at the Potsdam Wal-Mart.

According to police reports, this happened several times between Jan. 12 and Feb. 12 of last year, ending only after another Wal-Mart employee alerted management of the alleged scheme.

At that time Ms. Jones, who was tenured, was placed on paid administrative leave.

“That’s not a district decision,” said Superintendent Patrick H. Brady, who explained the district was obligated to pay her salary until she was terminated.

And according to state education law, termination couldn’t come until a disciplinary hearing was held.

The resolution to terminate Ms. Jones included the wording, “The board of education hereby acknowledges receipt of the written determination of hearing officer Cole (Sheila S. Cole), which determination finds Amy Jones guilty of certain charges of conduct unbecoming a teacher, immoral character, and neglect of duty.”

Following the meeting, Mr. Brady said Ms. Jones did work briefly in the district last spring.

“There was a time late last year when the district did have her doing some work, but that was not with students,” Mr. Brady said. “This year she was not called back in.”

The resolution to fire Ms. Jones was passed unanimously, with board of education members Wade A. Davis and James Hubbard not present.
