Roofing company to assess ice rink roof damage

The city’s Parks and Recreation Department should find out later this morning what the city should do about repairing the municipal ice rink’s wind-damaged roof.

A crew from Sands Brothers Roofing Co., Watertown, will assess how to repair the 120-foot portion ripped off by 60 mph winds on Sunday, said Parks and Recreation Superintendent Erin E. Gardner.

The part that came off, known as the flashing, covers the vent that runs along the peaked roof’s center line. It will probably have to be replaced. The roofing company will be working with the city’s engineering office.

The arena will continue to be open for business as usual. The repairs could be completed by the end of the week, Mrs. Gardner said.

According to Mrs. Gardner, the worst scenario would be a buildup of snow, which could then melt and leak onto the ice. Lake-effect snow and bitter cold are in the forecast for the week.

For years, the roof has leaked, leaving numerous puddles on the facility’s floor following rainstorms. Mrs. Gardner hopes to get that problem assessed and then possibly repaired in the 2014-15 budget.
