Remington museum executive director search under way

OGDENSBURG — A committee has been formed to launch a search for a new executive director of the Frederic Remington Art Museum.

Six members of the museum’s board of trustees, one member of its International Advisory Board and museum curator Laura A. Foster will direct the recruitment.

Edward A. LaVarnway, executive director since 2005, announced his retirement last week. He wants to leave by June, but has agreed to stay as long as it takes to find a replacement and help familiarize him or her with the job.

Julie H. Cliff, trustee and search committee chairwoman, said Thursday that a new executive director could well be hired by June.

“I think our goal is to honor his original request,” she said.

Mrs. Cliff said the committee’s first meeting will held next week. Strategy, including job description, where to advertise and a timeline for application receipt, reviews and interviews, will be established.

In addition to Mrs. Cliff and Ms. Foster, the other search committee members are board President William J. Cavanaugh, board Vice President Kathleen R. Wade, board Secretary Dianne Drayse Alonzo, International Advisory Board member and noted museum supporter Alan P. Newell and trustees Catherine B. Newell and Scott M. Wright.
