M-W boys overcome slow start in gaining NAC North win over B-M


MADRID - Overcoming a slow start, the Madrid-Waddington varsity boys basketball team picked up its third straight win heading into a showdown with St. Regis Falls on the road on Tuesday with a 58-44 decision over North Division rival Brushton-Moira at the hive on Friday.

“We really scrapped this one out,” said M-W coach Aaron Jones. “I’m really proud of the way the whole team battle backs. Greg Thompson had a great game for the second in a row really dominating the boards and Dylan Putney came off the bench and did a great defensive job.”

The Jackets fell behind 15-8 but outscored the Panthers 19-6 in the second quarter for a 27-21 halftime lead and never looked back for the win.

Thompson delivered a double double with 16 points, 12 rebounds and three steals for the Yellowjackets. Maurice Rease scored 15 points while Richard Weight added 13. Putney tallied five points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals off the bench while Jacob Barney posted five points. Zach Brock and Terry Crump each scored two.

Adam Martin scored 14 points for B-M. Justin Lavarnway generated nine points while Loren Traynor added eight and Alex Brunett chipped in six.

In other NAC boys basketball action on Friday, St. Regis Falls gained a 47-22 East Division win over Colton-Pierrepont while interdivisional matchups saw Chateaugay beat St. Lawrence Central 54-37, Morristown outscore Parishville-Hopkinton 70-32 and Edwards-Knox drop Tupper Lake 53-32.

Chateaugay 54, SLC 37: A 18-4 second quarter reversed a 12-11 deficit after one for the Bulldogs (10-4, 9-1) over the host Larries (7-8, 5-4).

Noah Bowes scored 16 points for Chateaugay while Chad Stalter added 13 followed by Matt Swanston with seven. Devon Barnes and Seth Youngs each netted six.

Zane Ramsdell scored 15 points for the Larries and pulled down 10 rebounds. Josh White added nine while Cody Meacham and Jessi Greer each logged four.

SRF 47, C-P 22: Caleb Green exploded for 21 points and Brandon Votra fired in 19 points leading the Saints (14-1, 8-1) past the host Colts (5-9, 2-6) keyed by a 12-0 first quarter run and a 20-8 fourth quarter finish.

Scott Boyce scored nine points for C-P. Gyle Dominy added seven.

Morristown 70, P-H 32: The Green Rockets produced four players in double figures and received scoring contributions from nine players en route to their fourth win of the season, Dakota Marshall generated 16 points as the 4-10 Rockets took a 21-5 lead after the first and sealed the win with a 21-6 second quarter advantage. Ryan Vollmer added 14 points while Bobby Simmons and Devin Dulmage each added 10. Jake VanArnam posted seven points while Allan Michael Martin and Chris Perretta scored six and five.

Tanner Wilson and Ryan Snyder each scored eight for P-H (0-10). Joey Curtis and Mike Burns each added six. Michael Cook finished with four.

E-K 53, Tupper Lake 32: The Cougars (12-2) ended a two-game losing streak taking command early with a 21-13 first quarter lead and expanding a 33-18 halftime lead with a 14-7 third quarter run against Tupper Lake (8-5).

Kaden Dandrow scored 16 points pacing the Cougars while Tyler Tresidder added 12 including three three’s, Chris Davison tallied 11 and Abe White chipped in eight.

Mitch Keniston scored 12 points for Tupper Lake. Anson Gagnier added seven.
