Spartans capture title for departing coach

CARTHAGE — Pat Conners didn’t look like a coach on the verge of retiring at Saturday’s Frontier League Tournament at Carthage High School.

The South Jefferson wrestling coach displayed the same kind of energy that he has for the last 21 years in leading the Spartans to the team title for the first time since 2009.

Conners had previously said he plans to retire after the season.

The Spartans won five weight classes and finished with 230.5 team points. General Brown placed second with 197 and Indian River was third with 151.5.

In addition to Crast, Jared Carroll (99 pounds), Caleb Beach (126), Daniel Smith (170) and Ryan Charlebois (195) each won their respective weight class for South Jefferson.

South Jefferson had a top-three finisher in 12 of the 15 weight classes.

Derrick Gray of Indian River won his fourth straight league title by claiming the 138-pound title.

Indian River’s Nick Toutant earned the most outstanding wrestler. He defeated Ryan Snow by decision in the 126 final.

Mike Mullins (120, Indian River), Shayne Brady (182, Carthage), and Tyler Silverthorn (160, General Brown), each won their second straight league title.

Immaculate Heart Central’s Nick Koelmel remained undefeated with a win at 145 pounds.
