SYRACUSE — Syracuse University and St. John’s University will play a home-and-home men’s basketball series that will feature a game at Madison Square Garden and a contest in the Carrier Dome over the next two seasons.

Syracuse will play St. John’s in Madison Square Garden on Dec. 14. St. John’s will come to the Carrier Dome the following season on a date to be determined.

“There are traditional series that are very important to us that go beyond conference affiliations,” said Dr. Daryl Gross, Director of Athletics at Syracuse. “One of those is St John’s, which has an obvious place in Syracuse basketball history.’’

Syracuse and St. John’s played 86 times. The Red Storm is the seventh-most familiar foe in Orange hoop history. Both programs were original members of the Big East Conference. Syracuse moves to the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2013-14.

Syracuse owns a 49-37 advantage in the overall series. The two clubs are scheduled to play this season on Sunday, Feb. 10, in the Carrier Dome.

“The rivalry with St. John’s has been one of the strongest for our program,” said Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim. “Playing in Madison Square Garden is always a special event for Syracuse and for our fans in New York City. It will be great that our fans in Central New York will have the chance to see St. John’s in the Dome the following year.”

Cannoneers fall to TCCC in Mid-State game

DRYDEN — Devin Redden scored 18 points to lead Tompkins-Cortland Community College to a 72-60 Mid-State Athletic Conference men’s basketball win over Jefferson CC on Wednesday.

Tyseem Lyles added 17 points for TCCC, ranked second in Region 3.

Kenneth Thomas led JCC (5-14, 0-8) with 16 points and Damien Jackson had 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.

■ Meghan Ideman made a 3-point play to put Tompkins-Cortland CC’s women’up by four points in overtime, and the Panthers earned a 51-47 Mid-State Athletic Conference victory over Jefferson CC.

Ideman and Becca Holton Tomasdottir each finished with 12 points for TCCC (6-12, 4-4).

Jasmine Canady scored a game-high 22 points, and Tapulei Vaveao added 13 points and 10 rebounds for Jefferson (9-12, 5-3).

Sophomore guard Dalian Ramos of the JCC women’s team was named JCC athlete of the week for the week ending Jan. 27.

Ramos, a graduate of Indian River Central School, helped lead the Cannoneers to a 2-0 record with wins against Corning CC and Broome CC.

Wake Forest to retire Chris Paul’s No. 3 jersey

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Wake Forest is retiring Chris Paul’s No. 3 jersey.

The school said Wednesday it will honor the former Demon Deacons guard during halftime of the Maryland game on March 2.

Paul’s will be the 11th jersey honored by the school and the first since Josh Howard’s No. 5 in 2004. No Demon Deacons player has worn No. 3 since he turned pro after the 2004-05 season.
