MASSENA - Students in Massena Central High Schools peer leadership program Link Crew recently met with freshmen to share strategies to be more successful throughout high school.
The Link Crew volunteers led the freshmen in three different exercises, each designed to reinforce an important strategy for success.
Senior Link Crew leaders Michael Stenlake and Dominque Valancius teamed up to lead one classroom in the exercises, one being the Paper Airplanes. This exercise required students to put their dominate hands behind their backs. Then using their opposite hands, they tried to fold a piece of paper into a paper airplane and fly it to the middle of the classroom.
Without the use of their dominant hands, every task was a struggle. The lesson was clearwhen students fail to use all of their strengths and resources, they handcuff themselves.
Your success in high school is up to you. You can make your life in high school easy if you choose to, Michael said.
He encouraged his schoolmates to take advantage of all of the schools opportunities.
Make sure you are open to everything new – sports, clubs, classes – and challenge yourself, he said.
