The three-pointer worked for the Potsdam Central boys basketball team in a convincing win over Salmon River while it worked against Massena Central in a loss to OFA in NAC Central Division matchups on Friday.
Potsdam 75, Salmon River 28: In Potsdam, four players combined to generate 11 threes as the Sandstoners took quick control with a 27-8 first-quarter surge. Konnor Bigwarfe led all scorers with 18 points, including four triples. Will Coleman (2 threes), Nick Vaccaro (3 threes) and Shawn Clark contributed 10 points apiece toward the winning effort. Owen Mitchell chipped in seven points. Duquan Pitts and Dan Stone added six apiece while Jacob Bryant and Thomas Hobbs each finished with four.
Kiio Jacobs and Josh Hynes anchored the scoring for Salmon River (1-14, 0-10) with nine points each. Justin Bigness netted seven and Dylan Whitehead accounted for the other three.
The Sandstoners (10-5, 5-5) play at Canton on Tuesday while the Shamrocks host OFA on Monday.
OFA 76, Massena 53: In Massena, the Blue Devils got off to a fast start then dashed any hopes for a Raider comeback with a 27-13 fourth-quarter run where they connected for five of their season-high 16 three-pointers.
OFA got the jump on us early but we battled back to make it a five-point game at the half and it was only a nine-point difference to start the fourth. Then OFA started hitting everything and the floodgates opened, said coach Tom Miller after the Raiders slipped to 9-7 overall and 6-4 in the Central Division.
Our guys played hard but OFA can put five guys on the floor that can all shoot threes and when they all start making them, is just so hard to defend, he added.
Zack Rusaw led the Massena scoresheet with 18 points. Xavier Viskovich added 10 followed by Joey LaBelle with nine, Rhoades Tarbell with eight, Tyler Haas with seven and Rob Cameron with one.
Kinnon LaRose led the way for the Blue Devils with 19 points, including five threes. Matt Piercey netted four threes in a 16-point effort followed by Pat Cosmo with 12 points, Breton LaRose with 11 and Colin Ross with nine as OFA moved to 14-1 overall and 8-1 in the Central.
The Raiders return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Malone to take on Franklin Academy.
Franklin Academy 94, Gouverneur 29: In the other Central Division game of the night, the visiting Huskies (15-1, 10-1) had six players reach double-figures in scoring led by Alex Johnson with 19 points. Mitch Gallagher added 15 followed by Kody Mulverhill with 12, Nate Monette with 12, Jon Dunlavey with 11 and Austin Lamay with 10.
Troy Gates netted nine points for the Wildcats (4-12, 3-7). Curt LaPlant tossed through another eight.
In the lone North Division contest on Friday, Tupper Lake rallied to claim a 49-48 decision on the road over St. Lawrence Central.
The host Larries jumped out to a 16-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and led 32-13 at the half before the Lumberjacks pulled back into the game with a 15-9 third-quarter run then completed their comeback in the fourth where a three-pointer at the buzzer by Cody LaPierre capped a decisive 21-7 run.
Zane Ramsdell led SLC with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Josh White added 10 points. Cody Meacham and Tyler Savage chipped six points each. Shane Fuentes and Jessi Greer closed out the scoring for the Larries (8-9, 4-3) with four points apiece.
Mitch Keniston anchored the Tupper Lake offense with 17 points. Nahua Botala followed with nine while LaPierre finished with eight.
In a pair of NAC East Division matchups on Friday, St. Regis Falls swept over Parishville-Hopkinton 67-19 and Chateaugay handled Colton-Pierrepont 47-29.
SRF 67, P-H 19: At St. Regis Falls, the Saints led 26-2 by the end of the first quarter en route to downing the Panthers. Caleb Green fired through 34 points to lead SRF (16-1, 10-1). Anthony Gibson added 11 followed by Brandon Votra with nine.
For P-H (0-13, 0-11), Mike Burns netted seven points followed by Tanner Wilson with five, Ryan Snyder with four and Mike Cook with three.
Chateaugay 47, C-P 29: In Colton, the visiting Bulldogs gradually pulled away from a 15-4 first quarter lead for the win. Barnes led all scorers with 11 points for Chateaugay. Noah Bowes added 10 followed by Swanston and Lang with six apiece.
Jake Angleberger paced the Colts with 10 points. Gyle Dominy chipped in seven followed by Zach Farr and Bruce Avery with four each. Scott Boyce and Ethan Knight closed out the C-P scoresheet with two points apiece.
The NAC West Division games on Friday saw Hammond outscore Hermon-DeKalb 60-49, Edwards-Knox down Morristown 67-53 and Heuvelton drop Clifton-Fine 51-28.
