John H. House Sr. (1862-1928) and his wife, Mary E. Hunt House (1854-1911) sit in front of their log cabin in this photo taken by Cora Benson in 1907. The structure was on the Indian River Road near Theresa in what is commonly called the English Settlement. The house was built before the Civil War by John Houses father, Ephraim House (1819-1905), one of the early settlers of the area, who raised a small family there with his wife, Delilah Klock House. This photo with article about the English Settlement ran in the Watertown Daily Times in 1941 and was resubmitted by Thomas F. LaClair of Clayton, a descendant of the Houses.
