Stockbroker leads campaign to bring indoor tennis courts to Fairgrounds Y

Cyril Mouaikel has silently been leading a community fundraising campaign since last summer to help raise money for indoor tennis courts to be added to the Fairgrounds Y, 585 Rand Drive.

Mr. Mouaikel, RBC Wealth Management branch director, started his campaign almost immediately after Stebbins Engineering and Manufacturing Co. purchased the Watertown Health & Racquet Club, 431 Eastern Blvd., to turn it into a storage building for construction equipment. He used the indoor courts there and said he would like to see indoor courts back in the community.

“It will be the least expensive way of doing it,” Mr. Mouaikel said. “You’re adding to the existing roof at the Y. All we’re doing is adding a sport at the Y.”

The total project, he said, would cost about $400,000, and so far a little more than $200,000 has been collected or pledged.

Opening the campaign to community members, he said, hopefully will allow it to move swiftly, and area residents might be able to “play next fall.”

Y Executive Director Peter W. Schmitt said although the Y is coming off a major capital campaign and cannot help fund the project, it will be “looking to be supportive to the tennis community” while thinking of the Y’s future.

“The timing of the need didn’t match up with us making it a capital priority,” Mr. Schmitt said.

That’s not stopping Mr. Mouaikel.

With commitment from the Y that includes overseeing tennis court operations, he said, he’s confident the community will support the campaign.

People can contribute any amount, and large amounts may be spread out over a five-year period.

“It’s a wonderful addition to the community,” Mr. Mouaikel said. “The only thing slowing us down is money.”
