South Jefferson and General Brown each claimed a Section 3 class wrestling team championship on Saturday.

The Spartans, competing in the Class B tournament at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, rode five individual champions to a team score of 260.5, well ahead of runner-up Phoenix with 198.

Caleb Beach (106 pounds), Jon Crast (132), Daniel Smith (170), Logan LaFlamme (182) and Ryan Charlebois (195) won their respective weight classes for South Jefferson, which had last won the team title in 2006.

General Brown defeated second-place Holland Patent by 29 team points to claim the Class C title at Hannibal. Tyler Silverthorn (160), Colton Erb (170) and Corey Gaffney (220) won individual titles for General Brown.

In the Class A Tournament, host Fulton claimed its 26th straight team title. Indian River placed second and Carthage was third.

For the Comets, Shayne Brady picked up his 200th career win en route to the 182 title. Trevor Gibbons (285), Colin Ryan (160) and Andrew McFarland (113) also won their respective divisions. McFarland was named Most Outstanding Wrestler.

In Class D, host Sandy Creek finished second behind Dolgeville. Jake Benedict (170) was the only individual champion for the Comets.

IHC’s Nick Koelmel won at 145 to remain undefeated at 30-0. Scott Hamblin claimed the 220 title for Copenhagen.

HOCKEY

CANTON 4, MALONE 1

Tanner Sanderson scored twice as the Bears rattled off four unanswered goals for an interdivision win in Canton.

Jacob Watson turned aside 25 shots for Canton (7-9-2, 5-3-2).

Trevor Cooley scored for Malone (7-10-1, 3-8-1).

JOHN JAY 3, OFA 1

Connor Moore scored one goal and assisted on another to lead the Indians to victory during the Islanders Tournament at Clayton. John Jay won the tournament based on points.

Shawn Smith and Jack Grimm also scored, and goalie Matt Lanza stopped 16 shots for John Jay.

Jon Tayler scored for OFA (10-5-2).

NORWOOD-NORFOLK 4, ISLANDERS 1

Tristen Harvey assisted on three goals to help lift the Flyers to victory during the Islanders Tournament in Clayton. The game also counted in the NAC standings.

Brandon Short had one goal and one assist, and Brandon Richards made 19 saves for Norwood-Norfolk (9-7-1, 7-5-0).

Evan Dier scored from Kyle Delaney for the Islanders (5-11-2, 2-10-1).

ST. LAWRENCE 4, NORTHWOOD PREP 2

Ian Lynch and Cody Kocsis provided a goal and an assist each to spark the Larries to a nonleague win over the Huskies in Brasher Falls.

Nate McLaughlin collected 27 saves for St. Lawrence (13-4-0).

Noah Wild supplied both goals for Northwood Prep.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

COLTON-PIERREPONT 43, MORRISTOWN 29

Morgan Doyle delivered a 22-point, 10-rebound performance as the Colts won an Northern Athletic Conference interdivision game over the Green Rockets (0-14) in Colton.

Kylie McKinley generated nine points, four rebounds and three steals for Colton-Pierrepont (6-10).

THOUSAND ISLANDS 47, A-P-W 23

Kristin McGraw and Kerstin Phelps provided 10 and nine points, respectively, to lead the Vikings (15-1, 14-1) to a Frontier League crossover win over the Rebels (6-11, 5-11) on Friday at Parish.
