MASSENA — The Massena Figure Skating Club’s annual ice show returned to the Massena Arena on Sunday as 82 skaters performed routines with a nautical flair.

This year’s theme was “Salchows and Seaweed.” Skaters dressed as pirates or mermaids and performed to tunes like “A Pirate’s Life for Me” and the Beatles’ famous “Yellow Submarine.”

The show is the club’s largest annual event, and the culmination of months of planning and training.

“It takes almost a year to plan,” said show chairwoman Aimee K. Auger.

The theme for the next year’s show is chosen in the spring, the music is selected by summer and everyone begins practicing in the fall.

Mrs. Auger performed a routine during the show with her husband Paul Auger, set to Train’s song “Mermaid.”

Skating runs in the Auger family. 15-year-old Zowie L. Auger also performed a solo at the show.

“I’ve been doing this almost my whole life,” she said.

Although she still gets nervous before a big show, she said the performance is a culmination of all her work.

“It’s just showing everyone what we’re working on,” she said.

All ages participated in the show. The youngest skaters were 3 years old, while other routines were performed by adults.

“I think it’s going to be really good this year,” said 11-year-old Jillian C. Chapman, who performed “Yo Ho, A Pirate’s Life For Me.”

She has been practicing her moves since the fall.

“Once you really get down the moves that you need it’s not that hard, but it is a lot of memorizing,” she said.

Fellow pirate performer Emily R. Allen, 7, said the show is one of the highlights of her year.

“They’re kind of nerve-wracking, but it’s really fun to look out there and see everyone,” she said.

The ice show was among the final events of Massena’s monthlong winter carnival.

Participants celebrated the carnival’s final weekend with a 5K run, children’s activities and horse-drawn wagon rides.
