Massena Police issue scam warning

MASSENA - Massena Village Police have received two calls about a recent phone scam going around the area.

The caller knows the name and address of the person they called and indicates that they have won the publisher clearing house sweepstakes, Massena Village Police Chief Timmy J. Currier said.

The call seems to be very professional, and the caller lays out the amount of winnings, taxes that need to be paid and what is required of the “winner.”The caller even goes over the specifics of the prize ceremony (as depicted on TV).

The person winning the prize is instructed to go to Wal-Mart or K-Mart to obtain two prepaid credit cards in the amount of $ 5000 each. A phone number is given, and the caller calls back later to obtain the card information.

A short time later the scammer calls back the “winner” to obtain the card number and to make final plans for the prize ceremony.

“This is a very clear scam and it is illegal,” Mr. Currier said.“Anyone that gives out the prepaid credit card number will fall victim to this scam when the scammer cashes in the card and no prize ever appears.”

People are encouraged to be very careful with phone solicitations.

■ Keep your personal, banking and financial information private and do not share it with anyone that you do not know or trust.

■ Follow the golden rule. If it seems to good to be true, it very likely is a scam.

“Fortunately in both these instances, the person receiving the calls was alert enough to recognize it as a scam and they failed to give out the information requested,” Mr. Currier said.“These callers sound professional and are very convincing, and they rely on people’s trust. Don’t fall prey to that.”
