Educators throughout the state soon will know about Watertown High School’s open principal position.

At Tuesday’s Watertown City School District Board of Education meeting, district Superintendent Terry N. Fralick presented a nearly final copy of the pamphlet advertising the position.

A final copy was posted on the district’s website Wednesday.

“We’re going to be sending them to the district superintendents in all the BOCES regions in New York state,” said Mr. Fralick, referring to the Board of Cooperative Educational Services.

Human Relations and Transportation Director Jason Ring, who Mr. Fralick said did “95 percent of the work,” said applicants will be able to apply online for the first time ever.

Important characteristics listed in the brochure include being “experienced and successful teacher and administrator who is able to mentor and coach teachers and staff to higher levels of job performance.”

The pamphlet also includes a letter from Mr. Fralick, a list of programs at the high school and characteristics of the students attending the school.

“WHS has a diverse student population including a strong military presence from the nearby military installation Fort Drum,” according to the pamphlet.

The pamphlet did not include the candidate’s willingness to relocate to the area if selected for the position.

Former Principal Lloyd L. Peck lived in Liverpool near Syracuse during the two years he led the high school. He resigned toward the end of the 2011-12 school year to accept superintendency at the Chenango Forks Central School District.

Board President Michael R. Flick said the brochure was meant to be a brief overview of the district.

“I don’t believe residency expectations were purposely omitted,” he said in an email. “As far as my personal opinion on residency, I think it’s important, but I also believe that any candidate should be considered as a whole first.”

Mr. Fralick prefers that the new principal live nearby, but residency is required only for superintendents.

“That would be something that would be addressed in an interview,” he said.

The candidate for the position, which the district wants to fill by July 1, will replace interim Principal Joseph M. McGrath, former Pulaski High School principal.

There were not many complaints about Mr. Ring’s latest draft.

Board Vice President Cynthia H. Bufalini said she thought the principal’s start date could be clarified. “It sounds like we’re going to start seeking them in July,” she said, referring to wording on the front of the pamphlet.

Mr. Fralick predicted the pamphlets will be mailed out by the end of the week and hopes to have a new principal selected by May. The application deadline is March 1.
