Lisbon plans on charging $15,000 per student for international program in the fall

LISBON – Beginning fall 2013 Lisbon Central School plans on bringing international students to the district, charging $10,000 for tuition and $5,000 for room and board.

“We should have students applying by early to mid-spring,” Superintendent Erin W. Woods said.

Ms. Woods said the school plans on accepting only the highest achieving students.

“We can Skype interview the students to get a better feel for them and their English speaking skills,” Ms. Woods said.

So far Ms. Woods said the community response has been positive.

“Community members have had conversations with me and it’s been pretty positive,” Ms. Woods said. “Creating multicultural opportunities for our students is a good thing.”

Ms. Woods said the school wants to start small with just two or three students the first year.

But before anything can happen the school needs host families to step forward.

Ms. Woods said the $5,000 room and board fee is in place to help cover the cost of having an extra person living at home.

Last Thursday was supposed to be the first community meeting to discuss the program but, due to a scheduling conflict with a basketball game and poor weather the meeting was poorly attended.

“It was discouraging,” Ms. Woods said of the meeting.

But Ms. Woods said they plan on rescheduling for early March to get more people involved.

“We’re still very optimistic that the international student program will be successful,” Ms. Woods said.

Ms. Woods also said she wants applicants to the program to understand that Lisbon is a rural district and come prepared to enjoy the region.
