N-N hockey team advances past Tupper Lake in Section 10 Division II opener


NORFOLK - A second-period surge carried the Norwood-Norfolk hockey team to a 7-4 win over Tupper Lake on Friday at Dominic Zappia Arena in the first round of the Section 10 Division II playoffs.

The Icemen improved to 11-8-2 with the win and will now get set to travel to Ogdensburg next Wednesday to take on second-seeded OFA starting at 6:30 p.m. The game will mark the fourth meeting of the season between the two with the Icemen having posted two one-goals wins and a tie.

“We did what we had to do tonight to win and now we have to try to get past Ogdensburg,” said coach Paul Durant. “We had three close games against and I’m sure it’s going to be another tough one on Wednesday.”

In the win over the Lumberjacks (1-19-1), the Icemen built a 3-2 in the first period before breaking the game open with three goals in a four-minute span early in the second. The Lumberjacks battled back to make it 6-4 with a pair of goals just 41 seconds apart late in the third before Austin Cousineau sealed the win when he converted off an assist from Dan Fyckes with just 43 seconds left in regulation.

Cousineau finished with two goals and three assists in the winning effort. Zeb Brown generated two goals and two assists. Troy Kovach also broke through for a pair of goals while Cody Smith netted a singleton. Brandon Short and Tristan Harvey each drew a pair of assists while Tyler Fobare logged a solo helper.

Ryan Thomas and Brandon Richards combined to make six saves sharing crease duties for the Iceman while Marcus Richer kept the Lumberjacks in contention with a 52-save performance.

Franklin Academy 2, Islanders 1: In the other Division II first round game played at the Malone Civic Center, the host Huskies (9-11-1) overcame an early deficit to turn back the Islanders and advance to a semi-final round matchup against top-seeded NAC regular season champion St. Lawrence Central at the Tri-Town Arena on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Trevor Hughes got the visiting Islanders off to a strong start when he finished off a play set up by Jordan VanBrocklin just 13:26 into the game. Trevor Henderson pulled the Huskies even just over two minutes later off an assist from Trevor Cooley.

Bailey Conklin notched the eventual game-winner at 7:07 of the third assisted by Cameron Daniels and Jake Perry.

Eighth-grader Joey Brown made 19 saves backstopping the win while Cole James handled 19 shots for the Islanders (6-13-2).
