On March 2 Ogdensburg City School will play host to this year’s regional Odyssey of the Mind competition.

Vanessa B.M. Florie, regional director of Odyssey of the Mind, said a total of nineteen teams, 126 students, will be competing on March 2.

Whoever wins will go to SUNY Binghamton to represent the region in the state championship.

There are five categories in this year’s Odyssey of the Mind competition and Ms. Florie said the teams “have been working on them since October.”

The categories are “Ooh-Motional Vehicle,” where students build a vehicle that expresses emotion and can be ridden around an obstacle course; “Weird Science,” where students invent a new explanation for natural phenomenon; “To be or not to be,” where students turn a Shakespeare tragedy into a comedy; “You Make the Call,” where students design a lightweight structure capable of holding lots of weight; and “Odyssey Angels,” where students design community service projects and preform what they would look like.

A surprise challenge will also be introduced on the day of the tournament.

The tournament starts at 8 a.m. At 2 p.m. the Awards Ceremony begins and the winners will go on to the state championship and, possibly, to the World Finals at Iowa State University.

Ms. Florie said the public is encouraged to come watch the event.

Students from Brasher Falls, Gouverneur and Saranac Lake Central Schools will join students from Ogdensburg City School in the competition.
