It was billed as the Battle on the Bay and anglers in the right spots spent Saturday enjoying some spirited tussles with quality walleye and northern pike in the ice fishing derby which was sponsored by Howies of Ogdensburg as an Wounded Warriors Outdoors Adventures event.
The derby, which was also part of the opening weekend of the Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerces River Shiver , drew 225 entries and the proceeds will be used as donations to the Ogdensburg Rescue Squad and Wounded Warriors programs.
Several servicemen from Fort Drum took part in the event and the all their entry fees and costs were covered by fund-raisers held at Howies and through a donation from FISHCAP which is an initiative to promote fishing in the St. Lawrence County.
I dont know how many fish the soldiers caught but they had a good time. The fishing today was just awesome. A lot of very nice walleyes were caught along with northern pike and most of the fish were released, said Don Dobbs who directed the on-ice weigh-in station.
The great number of walleyes caught shows how the walleye stocking has benefited the fishing. This derby is really going to grow in the future.
The father and son team of Jim and Tim Lalonde located a walleye hot spot and made several trips to weigh-in station and combined to win six of the hourly prizes. Five of their prize winners came in the first three hours of the derby which ran from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
But Tim Lalonde landed the $500 prize for the largest walleye of the day with a 12.5-pound beauty entered in the noon to 1 p.m. time slot.
The hourly prizes were $200, $125 and $75 for the three largest fish.
Pat Gallagher landed the $500 prize for the largest northern pike with an 11-pounder entered in the 8-9 a.m. time slot. The quality of the fishing was shown by the fact that all eight hourly winners weighed at least 7.5 pounds.
Gavin Amo led the Youth Division with a 5.25 lbs northern pike and all 10 youth anglers who entered a fish received a cash prize.
The largest fish of the day was 30 muskie landed by Jordan Spears which did not qualify for prize money because it was out of season. The catch was videotaped and the muskie was carefully released.
