Hammond, Heuvelton reach Section 10 Class D girls basketball final


CANTON - Two familiar foes will square off to decide the Section 10 Class D girls basketball champions after NAC West Division rivals Hammond and Heuvelton advanced to the title game with hard-fought semi-final round wins at the SUNY Canton fieldhouse on Tuesday.

The second-seeded Lady Red Devils now get set to take on the upstart fifth-seeded Lady Bulldogs in the Class D final on Friday at SUNY Potsdam’s Jerry Hourihan Gym starting at 6:15 p.m.

Hammond 39, Chateaugay 35: One year after Hammond rallied from a 24-point halftime deficit to win the Section 10 Class D1 Championship, it was the Bulldogs trying to rally to claim the Class D2 Championship from behind with a methodical comeback founded upon tenacious man-to-man defense.

A comeback which started when the Bulldogs revived their fading cause by scoring four points in 20 seconds to narrow a 16-9 margin to the 16-12 at the half.

Anchored by Alyssa Crosby’s scoring off post-up and penetration moves the Devils widened their lead to six points a various ventures of the second half but each time Chateaugay answered with crucial three-pointers by Hannah Cook and Courtney Boyea.

Boyea (8 points) hit two and Beach (15 points, 3 3s) netted one in the fourth quarter but Hammond used 10 fourth quarter points by Alyssa Crossby and 11-13 free throw shooting as a team in the quarter to claim a 39-35 victory.

Crosby, who collected 24 points, eight rebounds, four assists and five blocks, went 6-8 from the line in the final quarter and netted four straight after two Cook free thows cut the difference to 31-29 with 2:21 to play.

Emily Bush hit a pair with 45.6 second to play and Gabby Marshall added one with 13 seconds to play after an inside three-point play by Chateaugay’s Makayla Fleury (5 points, 9 rebounds) created a 37-35 difference.

Crosby added one free throw with 7/10ths of a second to play after rebounding Chateaugay’s last shot of the game.

Heuvelton 39, Madrid-Waddington 37 (OT):The way the regular season ended did not foretell that the Bulldogs would go on a playoff run and reach the championship game.

Heuvelton (15-6) lost three of its last four regular-season games, but has won three straight games in the Section 10 Class D playoffs and knocked out the top-seeded Yellow Jackets in the second semifinal. Heuvelton also avenged a 41-38 loss to Madrid-Waddington in the second game of the regular season with their second straight overtime win.

Lexi Weidner scored five of Heuvelton’s eight points in overtime and finished with eight for the Bulldogs.

Logan Tallman led Heuvelton with 12 points, all coming on 3-point baskets. Paige McCormick scored nine points and Olivia St. Pierre added eight.

The Yellow Jackets (18-2) struggled with free-throw shooting, making only 9-of-24.

Bridget Beldock led Madrid-Waddington with 13 points. Jenn King scored nine and Tess Knight added eight.
