Morristown woman charged with stealing from employer

CANTON — A Morristown woman stands accused of stealing nearly $500 from a Canton doctor’s office last year by falsifying bookkeeping documents, in one case for as little as $3, according to court documents.

Village police on Wednesday arrested Lucinda G. Elliott, 41, of 501 Main St., Morristown. She faces 24 counts of first-degree falsifying business records, a class E felony, and 24 counts of petit larceny, a class A misdemeanor, interim Canton Police Chief Victor N. Rycroft said.

Ms. Elliott worked in a doctor’s office at the E.J. Noble Building, 80 E. Main St. Police began an investigation in November after receiving reports of bookkeeping irregularities with the office’s accounts receivable, Mr. Rycroft said.

Ms. Elliott was employed as a secretary and office manager for Dr. Colleen M. Livingston, court documents show. In October, Dr. Livingston told investigators, another employee informed her that Ms. Elliott reportedly was maintaining a duplicate set of documents.

A review of office records revealed that Ms. Elliott falsified records for two-dozen transactions between February and October 2012, in amounts ranging from $3 to $100, according to court documents, with many entries for $10 or $15. Ms. Elliott allegedly deleted entries for the original transactions and kept the cash, which totaled $498.

She was arraigned Wednesday before Canton Town Justice Christopher R. Curley and released on her own recognizance. She is to reappear before the court later this month to answer the charges.
