WADDINGTON — Organizers of Waddington’s 2012 Ultimate Fishing Town USA contest bid say they have no plans to nominate the community again this year.

Preregistration for the contest is open, but past organizers said the contest conflicts with their plans to bring the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society’s Bassmaster Elite Series Tournament to the area in August.

“It requires a lot of time and energy to run the contest,” Mayor Janet M. Otto-Cassada said Tuesday. “With the tournament coming up, we just don’t have it this year.”

The contest requires months of campaigning, voting and advertising, Ms. Otto-Cassada said.

The town placed second the last two years, winning $5,000 each time. Organizers donated $4,500 to the St. Lawrence River Showdown Committee.

The money will be used to help plan events around the Bassmaster Elite Series Tournament, slated for Aug. 8 to 11.

Waddington’s announcement clears the way for other areas such as Ogdensburg and Massena. Last year, the city and town dropped out to support Waddington’s bid. Ogdensburg Director of Parks and Recreation Matthew J. Curatolo said his office has no plans to head a campaign this year, but he would support any north country nomination.

“If someone else from Ogdensburg, Massena or even Waddington wanted to nominate their town, we would also support them,” coordinator Deanna Shampine said. “I would be glad to offer my advice.”

As in previous years, the top prize is $25,000 to be invested in the future of fishing in the winning community, and a television feature on the World Fishing Network. Eight $3,500 regional prizes will be awarded to runners-up.

Towns, villages and cities can preregister at www.UltimateFishingTown.com. Official nominations will open March 4.
