BROWNVILLE — One person died in a shooting early Friday during an apparent domestic altercation at 200 St. Lawrence Ave. W.

Jefferson County sheriff’s detectives, who are investigating, were not releasing the victim’s identification as of late Friday, pending notification of next of kin.

The victim is a man, the sheriff’s office confirmed. A detective said the investigation is continuing, although his news release indicated suicide is suspected.

The dwelling is the home of Brent A. and Kelly L. Berkman Biedekapp, according to county property records. A town of Brownville resident confirmed that the couple lived in that house, although it is believed that they had split up.

“A female party involved in the dispute reported that her estranged husband entered the residence armed with a shotgun,” the news release disclosed. “After a brief struggle the female was able to flee the residence, but did report hearing a single gunshot after leaving the house.”

Jefferson County emergency dispatch received notification at 2:21 a.m. of a shooting with injury at the residence. Subsequently, sheriff’s deputies, state troopers and Watertown police surrounded the dwelling, and streets in the area were closed off by police and the Brownville Fire Department.

Eventually, sheriff’s and Watertown police entry teams went into the house and found the man dead “of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” according to the news release.

Streets were reopened shortly after 6 a.m. Shortly after 7:30 a.m., Dr. Samuel A. Livingstone, county medical examiner, arrived at the house to participate in the investigation.

Mr. and Mrs. Biedekapp were married April 11, 1992, according to Times files. Mrs. Biedekapp is listed on the General Brown Central School District’s website as a kindergarten teacher at Dexter Elementary School.

At the time of their marriage, Mr. Biedekapp was a driver and salesman for Pepsi-Cola of Watertown. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1982.
