City will borrow for a fire truck, Zamboni and library repairs

The city is moving ahead with plans to borrow to pay for a fire truck, a Zamboni ice machine and window and stucco replacement at the public library.

City Comptroller Philip A. Cosmo is compiling figures for a resolution to borrow that could be put before City Council as soon as next month.

The expenses and their cost estimates are:

nA A of has been mentioned, but Provisional Fire Chief Michael J. Farrell said Friday he is looking at several models and has yet to settle on a price.

nA Zamboni ice machine for use in winter at the Richard G. Lockwood Civic Center rink has been priced at $122,550, according to Parks and Recreation Director Matthew J. Curatolo.

The model currently in use is 40 years old, had other owners before the city and is prone to breakdowns. A new one, according to Mr. Curatolo, would be good for “15, 20 years, hopefully longer.”

nWindow replacement and stucco repair at the library, 312 Washington St., requires $98,500, according to City Manager John M. Pinkerton.

the library already has in hand a $52,709.80 for the window replacement and expects another grant for $24,732 for the stucco repair. The bond includes the 50 percent local matches required for the grants.

The window work includes the replacement of three 1970s bow vinyl windows at the rear and the side on the first floor of the library that are dirty beyond cleaning. Also, 44 wood-frame windows dating back to the 1920s are stuck closed and need to be re-glazed and stripped to improve heat efficiency.

“That’s what we need for these pieces,” Mr. Miller said Friday.

Each project would likely have its own length of repayment.
