Red Cross to begin fundraising campaign March 1

The American Red Cross of Northern New York will launch its inaugural “Heroes for the American Red Cross” fundraising campaign Friday.

People and community groups or organizations are asked to join the campaign and pledge to raise a minimum of $1,000 for the chapter. Chapter Executive Jane G. Gendron said she hopes to raise $10,000 to help fund disaster services and other Red Cross programs throughout Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.

“In Northern New York specifically, the majority of our expenditures are in disaster services,” she said. “We never have enough money to help individuals in a disaster, and we want to make sure training is available. It’s important for us to provide those skills to individuals so if someone collapses, chokes or is bleeding, folks know what to do. It’s simple: we’re here when you need us.”

A $1,000 pledge, Mrs. Gendron said, could cover the cost of three days of shelter, clothing and food for a family of four who has been displaced by a fire, or cover baby sitter training workshop fees for 15 young adults or 30 cardiopulmonary resuscitation/first aid training workshop fees.

The fundraising campaign is simple: from Friday until June 30, people or groups collect as much money as they can. Although there is a goal of $1,000, people are encouraged to go beyond that and to educate people about Red Cross services. The campaign begins in March as a celebration of National Red Cross Month.

There’s also an incentive for the team that raises the most money throughout the Northern and Central New York regions: a skybox for 16 people at the June 30 Syracuse Chiefs baseball game at Alliance Bank Stadium.

“We’re starting this very grassroots-like at the bottom, and hopefully we’ll get interesting and unique fundraising opportunities,” Mrs. Gendron said.
