GREAT BEND — Carthage Central School District’s budgets for special education and the Board of Cooperative Educational Services may be increasing a total of $449,942.

District Business Manager Amy M. Marrocco outlined the budgets for the two areas at the Board of Education meeting on Monday.

Jefferson-Lewis BOCES programs and services will increase $236,685, or 8.73 percent, from the current year’s $3,662,537.

Board member Mary Louise Hunt asked how many students are involved with Whiz Quiz, the spelling bee and programs for the gifted, for which BOCES charges $18,476 total.

“I’m looking at this $18,000 and I don’t know how many kids this affects,” she said.

Mrs. Marrocco said only one student was in the gifted program.

Also recommended was that $800,000 be put aside for the BOCES special education program.

“We still have a couple of high-needs students,” she said. “We could not employ a teacher to only teach one or two students.”

The district special education budget is projected to increase $213,257, or 5.8 percent, from this year’s $3,691,721. The bulk of the increases comes from instructional salaries and support staff salaries.

In other business, the board opted to allow Facilities Director Jeremy Theiser to decide whether to change the cooling in the summer by 2 degrees rather than vote on the matter.
