Watertown police officers returned Tuesday from Louisiana with a convicted sex offender, extradited because he failed to update the New York state sexual offender registry about his change of residence.
Brett P. Murdock, 43, Colfax, La., formerly of 206 Franklin St., faces a felony for his alleged failure to comply with sex offender registry requirements. He is being held without bail in the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building following arraignment Tuesday before City Judge Eugene R. Renzi.
Mr. Murdock, listed as a Level 3 sex offender, was convicted of first-degree counts of attempted rape and sodomy in December 1995 in Jefferson County Court. The crimes involved a 3-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy, according to the state registry. He was sentenced to a term of four to eight years and was discharged from prison on April 7, 2003, according to the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision website. He later had another conviction in Jefferson County, first-degree unlawful imprisonment, in March 2005, which brought another prison term, concluding in March 2008.
City police allege he moved from his Franklin Street apartment Dec. 31, and his whereabouts were unknown until police in Louisiana arrested him Jan. 23 on a Watertown police warrant.
