Police: Watertown man wielded baseball bat against girlfriend

A city man is facing five charges, including second-degree strangulation, after he allegedly braced a baseball bat against his girlfriend’s neck, causing her to lose consciousness.

Derrick G. Edmondson, 28, of 208 S. Pleasant St., was arrested Tuesday night by Watertown police and was detained overnight to await City Court arraignment. He also is charged with attempted second-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, fourth-degree criminal mischief and endangering the welfare of a child.

The incident occurred about 2 p.m. Monday in the residence he shares with Megan S. Witt, 20, and her 18-month-old daughter, according to police. During the couple’s domestic fight, Mr. Edmondson is accused of grabbing a wooden baseball bat and swinging it at Ms. Witt, police said. She was holding her daughter when that occurred, she told police.

He also allegedly used the bat to choke her, police said. She reported that she lost consciousness briefly and subsequently was treated at Samaritan Medical Center.

Police also charged that he punched and broke a mirror belonging to Ms. Witt.
