WEST CARTHAGE — The village board moved ahead five local laws Monday.

After review, the board agreed to have village Attorney Lawrence D. Hasseler look over four proposed local laws.

Village Clerk Deborah J. Pierce said the proposed law concerning farm animals within the village limits would exclude the Burdick property at 33 Broad St., which is classified as a dairy farm.

The clerk said the dog law was revamped, with changes including removing the leash length and rewording licensing through Jefferson County to the town of Champion. She said language used in the regulation of barking dogs and lawn maintenance also was addressed.

The proposed law regulating the use of bicycles was reworked because there was still a requirement from 1975 to obtain a bicycle license.

The village attorney will be asked to review these laws and one concerning soliciting. Mayor Scott M. Burto said that barring any problems, the board could set public hearings on the laws at the next meeting.

Mr. Burto asked the trustees to review municipal laws concerning nuisance abatement in hopes of drafting a similar law to address continued complaints.

“It gives value to complaints and allows us to provide more enforcement,” the mayor said.
