CANTON - Spring is around the corner, which means its sugaring time in the north country. To celebrate the flowing sap, TAUNY is throwing a party.
Children and families are invited to The TAUNY Center from 1 to 3 p.m. March 16 to celebrate maple sugaring season as French-Canadian families would have done a century ago.
Participants will enjoy a reading of the childrens book The Sugaring Off Party by Jonathan London, which describes a French-Canadian familys traditional sugaring-off celebration, including dancing, feasting, and syrup on snow. Then step into the book and kick up your heels as fiddlers Gretchen Koehler and Joel Foisy recreate a typical Quebecois house party. They will teach traditional French folk dances and songs and share the secret to playing the spoons.
The music and dancing will be followed by delicious wax-on-snow prepared by local maple producer Art Hurlbut.
Children of all ages are welcome; those under 6 will learn basic dance steps and enjoy a craft project. Participants are encouraged to bring comfortable shoes. Tout le monde danse. Everybody danc.!
This is a popular event; please RSVP to help TAUNY plan (386-4289; firstname.lastname@example.org). TAUNYs Sugaring Off Party is free and open to the public, thanks to support from Stewarts Shops.
