Lisbon wins cheering title

LISBON - The back of the 2013 edition of the 7th Annual Lisbon Central School Cheerleading Competition commemorative T-Shirt show a slogan saying “I came to win. to thrive. I came to win.. to survive.. to prosper.. to rise.”

And both host Lisbon and Malone’s Franklin Academy rose to the occasion earning Varsity B and Varsity A titles in a standing room only gymnasium.

“I can’t say enough about tonight’s turnout,” said Lisbon coach Beth Hooper. “Our attendance was well above last year and we were missing a few teams like OFA who was cheering on their basketball tonight. This is a major fundraiser for our program and every dollar goes right back into it.”

Exhibitions were performed at the highest level by the Northern New York All-Stars which include performers from Jefferson, Oswego, St. Lawrence, and Lewis counties and the Dexter Pop Warner Cheering team which competes nationally.

“Our competition is very competitive and showcases a lot of talent. I thought 169 points was very good. We’ll look more at the judges sheets tonight and we’ll see if we can tweak a few things for Sunday,” said Hooper whose team will be back in action on Sunday at the OFA competition at 3 p.m.

Teams in the high school divisions were judged on jumps, tumbling, stunts including basket tosses and pyramids, dance, motion, showmanship, crowd appeal, transition and formations, creativity and choreography, execution of routine, and overall impression for a maximum score of 100 per judge.
