HAMDEN, Conn. Kayla Raniwsky scored 10 minutes, 56 seconds into overtime on a wraparound goal and Carmen MacDonald stopped all 46 shots she faced as the St. Lawrence womens hockey team blanked Quinnipiac, 1-0, in the first game of the best-of-three ECAC quarterfinal series on Friday night.
Jacqueline Wand assisted on the Raniwsky goal for the Saints (18-12-5), who can close out the Bobcats today at 4 in game two. MacDonald notched her second shutout of the season.
Victoria Vigilanti made 38 saves for Quinnipiac (19-11-4).
TUFTS 57, ST. LAWRENCE 32
Hannah Foley and Hayley Kanner both scored 11 points to lead a balanced attack as the host Jumbos downed the Saints in the first round on the NCAA Division III tournament in Medford, Mass.
Tufts (24-2) raced out to a 35-13 halftime lead and never looked back. The Jumbos will face Babson in the second round tonight at 7 for the right to go to the regionals.
Kelly Legg paced St. Lawrence (19-9) with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Kara McDuffee added nine.
SYRACUSE 9, VIRGINIA 8 (OT)
Kevin Rice tallied the game-winning goal with one minute left in sudden-death overtime on a high-rising shot to give the 18th-ranked Orange in upset victory over the sixth-ranked Cavaliers in a nonconference game at the Carrier Dome.
JoJo Marasco scored twice and goalie Bobby Wardwell made nine saves for Syracuse (2-1). Dylan Donahue netted a goal and an assist.
Mark Cockerton and Rob Emery both had a pair of goals for Virginia (4-1), while Dan Marino stopped seven shots.
SUNY POTSDAM 9-6, LYNDON ST. 0-3
Jordan Sarat homered twice and pitched six innings as the Bears opened the season with a doubleheader sweep of the Hornets in Glens Falls. The second game went eight innings.
Ashley Thayer picked up wins in both games for SUNY Potsdam (2-0), and Katie Marsman hit a three-run shot in game one.
Taylor Young tripled and drove in a pair of runs for Lyndon (Vt.) State (4-6).
SUNY CANTON DROPS PAIR
RITs Kelsey McManus crushed a run-scoring double in the fifth inning to defeat SUNY Canton, 5-3, in Clermont, Fla.
Andrea Rogers belted a three-run home run in the first inning for the Kangaroos (0-8).
Ferrum (Va.) College routed SUNY Canton, 17-5, in the second game, closing out the Kangaroos spring trip.
HANNIBAL-LAGRANGE 8, SUNY CANTON 4
Jordan Hunneyman, Gerardo Torres and Tom Darling each had RBI singles as the Roos fell to the Trojans in Auburndale, Fla.
