GOUVERNEUR - Owen R. Matott Sr., 87, passed away Thursday, February 28, 2013 in Syracuse.

A funeral service will be held Monday, March 4th at 11:00 am at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with Rev. Gregory Bailey, pastor of the Trinity Episcopal Church officiating and burial in Jerusalem Cemetery, DeKalb. Calling hours are Sunday from 1:00 to 3:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

Owen was born March 14, 1925 in Champlain, the son of Ralph and Doris Turnbull Matott.

He attended school in Chazy until he was drafted into the United States Army and served during WW II in the military police. He received an honorary diploma from Chazy school several years later.

Owen worked at St. Joe Minerals Company for 25 years, NESCO, Fun Unlimited, and worked out of his own shop as a small engine repairman. He enjoyed time spent with his family, fishing, sharing the local news at the Donut Shop, and working out in his shop. He was known for his tasty barbeque chicken and had been a member of the Gouverneur Elks Lodge.

Owen married Eloise Hitchman Irish in 1962. He was previously married to Antoinette Boulerice Kerr.

Owen is survived by his wife Eloise, 7 sons Richard and Sonja of Russell, Robert and Joanne of DeKalb Jct., Richard and Debbie of Gouverneur, Michael and Barb of Spencerport, Owen Jr. and Kim of Wellsville, Randy and Agnieszka of Theresa, Timothy and Becky of Massena, 4 daughters Lucinda “Cindy” and Allyn Knowland of Scotia, Wilma Carpenter of Gouverneur, Jodie Matice of Gouverneur, Laurie and Scott Preston of North Carolina, several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother Burton Matott of Sherburne, 3 sisters Thelma Matott of DeKalb, Elaine “Effie” Terry of DeKalb, Alaine “Jumbo” McGill of Hailesboro, many nieces and nephews. Owen is predeceased by 3 brothers Clinton, Leland, and Lloyd Matott, 2 sisters Joyce Durham and Wilma Matott who passed away as a child.
