Graduates from basic training: Four north country residents have earned the rank of private in the Marines after graduating from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.
Marine Corps Pvt. Patrick W. Cook, son of Patricia A. and Paul J. Cook, Chateaugay, is a 2012 graduate of Chateaugay Central School.
Marine Corps Pvt. Zachary K. Kallen, son of Derek K. Kallen, Copenhagen, is a 2011 graduate of General Brown Central School, Dexter.
Marine Corps Pvt. Nolan R. Baker, son of James A. Baker, Potsdam, is a 2012 graduate of Potsdam Central School.

Returns from deployment: Three north country resident have returned to the U.S. after being deployed overseas at a forward operating base to serve in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Army Spc. Richard A. Huyck is the son of Tammy Schwahn, Corcoran Road, Colton. He is a cavalry scout assigned to the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. He has served in the military for two years. The specialist is a 2008 graduate of Ilion Junior/Senior High School.
Army Pfc. Axton I. Parker is the son of Jean and J.R. Tibbles, County Route 15, LaFargeville. He is a cannon crewmember assigned to the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. He has served in the military for two years. Mr. Parker is a 2003 graduate of Alexandria Central School, Alexandria Bay. He received an associate degree in 2005 from Columbia Green Community College, Hudson, and a bachelors degree in 2008 from SUNY Potsdam.
Army Spc. Kenneth M. Sova, is the son of Phyllis Gaurin, Star Lake, and grandson of Joyce Taylor, Spring Street, Fine. His wife, Autumn, is the daughter of Lyle and Cassie Camidge, Felts Mills. Mr. Sova is a mechanic assigned to the 98th Maintenance Company at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. He has served in the military for two years. The specialist is a 2009 graduate of Clifton-Fine Central School, Star Lake.
